Chinese ACs Surge 43% in Europe – Who's Cashing In?

Paris supermarket doors crushed by crowds, a woman fainting but still clutching her air cooler, stores shutting down due to chaos—these scenes are going viral. For appliance manufacturers, this is more than news; it's a market signal worth decoding.

Behind this buying frenzy lies a long-term incremental market unlocked by extreme climate change. France's AC penetration is only 25%, held back by strict building regulations, high installation costs, and environmental resistance. But with Paris hitting 45°C, these barriers are crumbling. Europe's cooling market is shifting from "nice-to-have" to "must-have."

Signal 1: Portable ACs are booming. In H1 2026, China's AC exports to the EU hit $3.76 billion, up 43.2%, with France, the Netherlands, and Belgium doubling their imports. Portable, installation-free ACs surged over 70%, far outpacing traditional split systems. European consumers are bypassing installation hurdles. The first movers to adapt products to European layouts will secure the early advantage.

Signal 2: Europe's brand landscape is far from fixed. Gree grew ~50% in France, Midea over 70% in Western Europe, Haier 30% across the region, TCL skyrocketed 300%, and Hisense doubled. The wide gap in growth rates shows Europe has no impenetrable brand barriers. For smaller manufacturers, this is a strategic window to overtake the competition.

Signal 3: Logistics speed is becoming a competitive advantage. Ocean freight takes ~40 days; the China-Europe Railway Express shortens this to 15–25 days. JD's Joybuy offers next-day delivery for major appliances, with its installation team expanded by over 400%. Local warehousing, multimodal logistics, and installation partnerships are now directly shaping where orders land.

Signal 4: The window for local production is narrowing. Midea and Haier have set up plants and R&D centers in Europe. Local production offers tariff avoidance, rapid restocking, customization, and stronger brand trust. For those still on the sidelines, entry barriers will only grow once leaders complete their localization.

This marks the third time Chinese manufacturing has answered a sudden global demand surge. From electric blankets in 2022 to ACs in 2026, China's supply chain has proven its responsiveness. China produces 80% of the world's ACs—capacity is not the issue. The real competition lies in product adaptation speed, channel agility, and after-sales service depth.

With global warming intensifying, Europe's cooling market still has vast untapped potential. The gaps exposed by this heatwave offer clear strategic directions for manufacturers. Strengthening full-chain capabilities for Europe is more urgent than ever.
