Chinese Appliance Giants Flock to Thailand: The "Iron Triangle" Takes Shape

发布日期:2026-09-02 09:04:40   点击量:10次
Thailand is rapidly becoming a new manufacturing hub for Chinese home appliance companies. From Haier to Midea to Hisense, industry leaders are expanding capacity at an astonishing pace, with "mega-factories" rising across the country—painting a clear picture of a shift from "Made in China" to "Made in Southeast Asia."
         Speed That Defies Expectations
The pace of this capacity buildout is remarkable. In September 2025, Haier's Chonburi air conditioner production base officially commenced operations, with an annual planned capacity of 6 million units covering 14 product categories and thousands of models. It is not only the fastest overseas construction record for a Chinese brand but also the largest and most digitally advanced home air conditioner manufacturing base for a Chinese brand in Southeast Asia. Just six months after launch, the 1 millionth unit rolled off the production line in February this year. In the first quarter, the plant generated RMB 446 million in revenue—a 129% increase over the previous quarter.
         Midea: A "Lighthouse" in Thailand

Midea is running at a similar pace. Its Chonburi factory, spanning roughly the size of 45 standard football fields, is operating at full speed with one air conditioner rolling off the line every six seconds. Annual capacity has already exceeded 5 million units—enough to cover the full-year air conditioner demand of most mid-sized countries. The facility is the first overseas "Lighthouse Factory" in the home appliance industry, integrating 13 intelligent agents and deploying 72 AI and digital solutions. Its end-to-end order cycle is 43% shorter than the industry average—delivering products to global customers in just 26 day.

Hisense and TCL Join the Race

Hisense has invested THB 4.7 billion in a smart manufacturing industrial park in Chonburi, targeting refrigerator and washing machine production with the goal of building ASEAN's largest white goods manufacturing base. Phase one will exceed 2.6 million units of annual capacity, with completion expected by mid-2026. Prior to this, Hisense had already built an air conditioner factory in Rayong with an annual design capacity of 3 million units. TCL Smart Home is also advancing its capacity buildout in Thailand—phase one, a 300,000-unit freezer line, came online earlier this year, while phase two, a 1.4 million-unit premium air-cooled refrigerator production line, is under active development with total investment not exceeding RMB 680 million.
          The "Iron Triangle" Takes Shape
Behind this investment surge, a clear strategic footprint is taking shape. Haier has formed an industrial "iron triangle" in Thailand—comprising the Chonburi home air conditioner base, the Prachinburi base, and a newly built central air conditioner AI agent factory—providing full manufacturing capability from home AC to commercial central AC. Midea has similarly built a "Thailand-Indonesia-Vietnam" triangle, creating a manufacturing network that covers Southeast Asia.
         Market Share Gains Momentum
As capacity expands, market share follows. EuroMonitor data shows that Chinese brands captured 20.8% of Southeast Asia's 61 major home appliance categories in 2025, up 3.8 percentage points from 2020—surpassing the 20% mark for the first time. The air conditioner segment stands out: Chinese brands grew from 16.1% in 2020 to 26.6% in 2025, while Japanese brands slipped from 43.7% to 37.2% over the same period.
Nikkei Asia attributes this shift to changing consumer perceptions. Southeast Asian consumers once viewed Japanese and Korean brands as the "gold standard of reliability," but in recent years, middle-to-high-income groups have increasingly found Japanese and Korean products to be conservatively configured and slow to iterate. Chinese manufacturers have stepped into this void with feature-rich, energy-efficient products and round-the-clock service networks.
What This Means for International Partners
For international partners, the takeaway is straightforward: Chinese appliance makers are moving from "Made in China, selling globally" to a dual-track model—"Made in region, selling regionally, alongside Made in China, selling globally." The capacity buildout in Thailand means shorter delivery times, more flexible supply chains, and lower trade risks. As Haier's Thailand leadership puts it, this is not just about "moving production lines overseas"—it is about achieving "R&D, manufacturing, and marketing integration" at the local level, building regional ecosystems that compete on speed, customization, and local relevance.
